Whitestown, Grave Yard Rush

COMHAIRLE CONTAE FHINE GALL

FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL

BALBRIGGAN/SWORDS AREA COMMITTEE MEETING

[Services A – Operational Matters]

Thursday, 14th April, 2016

ITEM NO. 100

Motion: Councillor B. Dennehy

“That the Chief Executive outlines the current contingency plans available to address

the situation of the Grave Yard, Whitestown, Rush filling up which is currently

happening rapidly.”

Report:

The Operations Department does not have any plans to extend Whitestown Burial

Ground. An assessment of land availability and suitability would be required in the

first instance before a commitment for such an extension could be made. It is also

noted that the Council, due to the substantial costs of developing burial grounds,

now favours a more regional approach to cemetery provision of larger high quality

sites.

At present there is capacity for an additional 140 graves approx. and based on recent

numbers, it is estimated that this is adequate capacity for another 10 years. This is,

in addition to the number of new graves, existing graves which have capacity for

additional burials.
