COMHAIRLE CONTAE FHINE GALL
FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL
BALBRIGGAN/SWORDS AREA COMMITTEE MEETING
[Services A – Operational Matters]
Thursday, 8th March 2018
ITEM NO. 24
Question: Councillor B. Dennehy
“To ask the Chief Executive to outline what progress has been made on the
delivery of ancillary items to the South Beach Rush car park and surrounding
area’s such as seating, showers, making the existing toilets wheel chair accessible
as well as the delivery of flag poles and more litter bins all covered in agenda
item 20 at the December 2017 area meeting. The purpose of the necessity for
delivery of the ancillary facilities will reinforce the campaign to have a blue flag
delivered for the South Beach aided further with the activation of the new Rush
sewage network scheme which is connected to the Donabate treatment plant?”
Reply:
The Operations department have on hand a wide range of requests for
additional facilities at all of the Fingal beaches. In order to create a fair and
balanced beaches work programme, it is intended to carry out a full review of all
beaches over a 12 month period (commencing Q2 2018) and from that review to
identify and prioritise works across our beaches, to ensure that any investment
made to improving beach amenities and infrastructure is supported by fact.
In the interim, beaches will be inspected and any minor improvement and
routine maintenance works such as painting touch up, litter bins etc. that will
improve the general appearance of the area will be programmed for attention.
With regard to the Blue Flag award, the calculation method set down for Blue
Flag adjudication requires that bathing water must reach “Excellent” quality
standard over a consecutive 4 year period. In this regard, the earliest that Rush
South Beach could qualify for a Blue Flag is 2022, assuming that the water quality
is excellent for the next 4 years, from 2018 onwards.
