COMHAIRLE CONTAE FHINE GALL
FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL
BALBRIGGAN/SWORDS AREA COMMITTEE MEETING
[Services A – Operational Matters]
Thursday, 9th May 2019
ITEM NO. 13
Question: Councillor B. Dennehy
"To ask the Chief Executive to outline the pending infrastructural improvements
planned at the South Shore Beach car park, Rush, particularly items that will help
deliver the blue flag status to the South Beach, Rush?"
Reply:
Due to the requirement for 4 consecutive years with “Excellent” overall Water
Quality the earliest that Rush South Beach would be in a position to apply for a
Blue Flag would be after the 2021 Bathing Season for award for the 2022 season.
Without satisfying the Water Quality criteria, and irrespective of all other criteria
achieving standard, no Blue Flag will be awarded.
The Table below outlines the water quality classification for Rush South Beach
since 2014:
Beach 2017 2016 2015 2014
Rush South Beach Poor Sufficient Poor Poor
The overall classification for 2018 has not yet been notified to the Council.
In the short to medium term the current infrastructure will be maintained to
standard, and, if and when, the Water Quality reaches the required “Excellent”
overall status for a period of 4 consecutive years (the earliest this can happen is
for the 2022 season), the Operations Department will carry out a review of
infrastructure required for the Blue Flag Award.
