COMHAIRLE CONTAE FHINE GALL
FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL
BALBRIGGAN/SWORDS AREA COMMITTEE MEETING
[Services A – Operational Matters]
Thursday, 9th April 2015
ITEM NO. 28
Question: Councillor B Dennehy
“To ask the Chief Executive to outline any current or future plans to put the eyesore
of the overhead cabling currently on the Main Street of Rush underground in order to
upgrade the aesthetics of the street ”
Reply:
Representations have previously been made to the Operations Department through
this Committee (January 2012 and January 2014) in relation to the undergrounding
of the overhead cables in Main Street, Rush. It is acknowledged that the
undergrounding of services is a major enhancement in areas where it has been
carried out, and while no detailed assessment has been undertaken on the cost of
the works, based on previous projects of a similar nature, this cost is estimated to be
in excess of €0.5M with this figure liable to rise substantially given our experience in
dealing with utility providers on similar projects. The level of disruption to local
businesses and citizens caused by the works related to the undergrounding of
services should not be underestimated. It should also be noted that the road
pavement of Main Street was resurfaced in November 2013. Such a project can only
be undertaken whenever the necessary funding for the works can be identified.
