BALBRIGGAN/SWORDS AREA COMMITTEE MEETING

[Services A – Operational Matters]

Thursday 11th September, 2014

ITEM NO. 86

Motion: Councillor B. Dennehy :

“That this Area Committee asks the Chief Executive to seek grant funding from the NTA for at least

two speed readers to be installed on the two main road access routes to the town of Rush namely the

Whitestown and Skerries Roads in order to curtail the traffic speed which is a growing problem for the

residents of Rush.”

Report:

A traffic survey and a study of accident statistics at this location will be carried out by the Traffic

Section to determine the actual speeds and volumes of traffic on this route. Following on from this

survey and the analysis of relevant data, appropriate traffic calming options, including the provision

of speed readers, will be considered.

Speed Reader funding is currently received from the NRA as part of ‘Low Cost Safety Scheme’

funding. Locations are chosen where there is a "treatable" collision problem and where it is

possible to achieve a minimum 30% - 40% reduction in collisions. Some locations showing

demonstrable hazard may also be considered for speed readers.
