SWORDS WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT

COMHAIRLE CONTAE FHINE GALL

FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL

BALBRIGGAN/SWORDS AREA COMMITTEE MEETING

(Services B – Strategic & General Matters)

THURSDAY 10TH MAY, 2018

ITEM NO. 72

Motion: Councillor D. Butler

“That the Chief Executive must take immediate action with regard to the

Swords Waste Water Treatment Plant as disgusting smells from this

facility continue to torment local residents and significantly disrupt their

way of life; that this has gone on for too long at this stage, that residents

have put up with more than enough and that they should not have to

endure these disgusting smells for another summer. “

Response:

Swords Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) currently does not have any

significant operational issues on site (breakdowns etc) which would

contribute a significant detrimental effect on odours from the treatment

plant. Unscheduled breakdowns of mechanical or electrical equipment

may, on occasion, account for potential odour issues at the plant; but this

is not currently the case. However, Swords WWTP staff will continue to

investigate any further potential sources on site and implement remedial

measures, as necessary, as a priority.

Swords WWTP staff are also currently sourcing improvements to the

odour control units on site, including changing out the relevant odour

control media. Additionally, an initial order for replacement of the carbon

based media is currently being progressed through Irish Water, with

others to follow in the coming weeks, and we hope to have this media

replacement completed in the near future.
